The center operates two flagship light sources:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Elettra synchrotron<\/strong>, a third-generation storage ring supplying over 30 beamlines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>FERMI<\/strong>, a world-class free-electron laser that delivers ultrashort, fully coherent UV to soft X-ray pulses lasting just a few dozen femtoseconds.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These tools help scientists and engineers explore materials and processes at the atomic level\u2014unlocking innovations in microelectronics, energy storage, aerospace, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of our beamlines, including Spectromicroscopy, play a key role in applied industrial research. Techniques such as X-ray spectroscopy and nanoscale imaging are used to investigate surfaces, thin films, and nanostructures\u2014critical in optimizing materials for semiconductors, energy storage devices, and catalytic systems. This direct link between experimental science and real-world applications helps accelerate innovation in both manufacturing and advanced technology development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our history is marked by bold engineering achievements. For instance, constructing FERMI demanded precise mechanical and thermal stabilization systems, custom high-precision components, advanced diagnostics, and femtosecond synchronization. At the heart of this transformation is a new 12-arc lattice (S6BA-E) that reduces horizontal emittance by a factor of 50\u2014achieving ultra-focused, stable beams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This leap in performance translates into a&nbsp;<strong>100-fold increase in brilliance at 10\u202fkeV<\/strong>&nbsp;and up to&nbsp;<strong>60\u00d7 improvement in coherence at 1\u202fkeV<\/strong>. All while reusing the original infrastructure\u2014making Elettra\u202f2.0 both a scientific and engineering milestone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delivering on this vision calls for ultra-precise mechanical systems spanning vacuum chambers, beamline supports, and beam steering elements\u2014each designed and built with exacting attention to detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-into-the-beamline-the-system-behind-elettra-2-0\"><strong>Into the Beamline: The System Behind Elettra 2.0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Engineering systems for Elettra\u202f2.0 means working at the intersection of extreme stability, ultra-high vacuum, and photon beam quality. The system includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Motion stages&nbsp;<\/strong>that can move with nanometer-level precision\u2014essential for experiments requiring extreme accuracy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ultra-high vacuum (UHV)-compatible components<\/strong>&nbsp;made from ceramics and OFHC copper<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vibration-isolated support feet<\/strong>&nbsp;to maintain ultra-stable positioning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each element had to meet tight tolerances, withstand thermal and mechanical stresses, and integrate with CAD-based design workflows. Motion precision is not only a mechanical requirement\u2014it directly affects spatial resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, and the reproducibility of nanoscale imaging and X-ray absorption measurements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bringing-the-motion-system-to-life\"><strong>Bringing the Motion System to Life<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, our team began translating detailed CAD models into physical components through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/get.xometry.asia\/?locale=en\">Xometry\u2019s manufacturing platform<\/a>. All components, including ceramic and high-purity copper parts, passed vacuum cleanliness tests\u2014guaranteeing a contamination-free environment. Meanwhile, vibration-isolation feet kept the setup stable with microscope-level steadiness. Together, these elements fulfilled the rigorous operational demands of the beamline\u2014validating their role in the broader Elettra\u202f2.0 platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-launchpad-for-further-innovation\">A Launchpad for Further Innovation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the XYZ system successfully implemented, Elettra is moving ahead to develop new high-frequency components for its upgraded storage ring\u2014pushing the limits of light science even further.
