Hi, I\u2019m Nils \u2014 a designer and a student at the Wei\u00dfensee Academy of Art in Berlin (Germany), driven by curiosity and a love for merging craft with technology. In a world where most speakers focus purely on technical performance, with TR\u00d6TE I set out to make sound visible, transforming it into a sculptural experience. TR\u00d6TE is more than a high-end audio device; it\u2019s an exploration of material, form, and acoustics brought together in a singular object that\u2019s as much a sculpture as it is a speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TR\u00d6TE began with a bold question I asked myself: Can sound become a physical form?<\/em> This challenge brought together traditional craftsmanship, acoustic science, and advanced manufacturing. Rather than hide components inside a box, I wanted TR\u00d6TE to showcase its structure \u2014 making each element part of a visual and acoustic story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name \u201cTr\u00f6te\u201d in German refers to a crude and noisy horn. With this project, I turned that idea on its head. TR\u00d6TE is deliberate, sonically refined, and engineered with intention. It is as much a musical instrument as it is a sculptural installation \u2014 proving that sound design can move beyond function to become an expressive art form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crafting the Heart: The Hand-Blown Glass Horn<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of this vision lies an individually hand-blown glass horn, each one unique in its details. The result is a product that doesn\u2019t just play music \u2014 it makes sound tangible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skilled glassblowers use a traditional pipe and controlled rotation to shape each horn, introducing subtle variations in wall thickness, curvature, and diameter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These variations create slight differences in acoustic behavior and give each horn its own character. After shaping, the horns are annealed in a kiln to remove internal stresses, then carefully trimmed and polished for a refined, sculptural finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This handcrafted approach means no two TR\u00d6TE horns are identical, each one is a unique sonic and visual signature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engineering, Inspired by Classic Audio Icons<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While the glass horn defines TR\u00d6TE\u2019s expressive personality, its technical backbone is rooted in precision engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design references the iconic proportions of OJAS bookshelf speakers<\/a>, optimized for an 8-inch driver \u2014 a subtle homage to timeless hi-fi audio design. The adjustable aluminum base allows a 5-degree tilt, ensuring optimal sound projection to the listener\u2019s ear level and enhancing the immersive experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fusion of organic glass and engineered metal creates a balance between art and performance that is rare in the audio world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Precision Behind the Base<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To realize the ambitious design, I needed mechanical parts that would match the uniqueness and precision of the glass horns. Xometry supplied custom laser-cut aluminum components with exceptional accuracy and consistency \u2014 even in low production volumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This capability was crucial for prototyping and small-scale production, enabling rapid iteration without compromising quality. The precision aluminum base not only supports the glass horn but also ensures the stability and longevity needed for high-end audio performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, TR\u00d6TE became exactly what I had imagined \u2014 a piece that turns sound into a sculptural, almost living presence. It\u2019s a fusion of craft and engineering, of glass and metal, of art and precision. For me, it\u2019s proof that when we let materials speak and embrace both tradition and technology, we can create objects that go far beyond function \u2014 objects that invite us to listen with our eyes, feel with our hands, and experience sound in a completely new way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
